Stone Central's sawn finish has been cut using precision diamond saw blades. Our bluestone is then further processed to remove any blade marks from the top surface resulting in a refined and smooth, yet excellent slip-resistant surface, suitable for demanding Australian outdoor applications such as pool surrounds, driveways and alfresco areas where safety is paramount.

Our semi-honed finish is a popular choice for outdoor areas such as driveways, patios, pools and walkways, featuring a slightly darker tone than our sawn finish. This elegant yet practical option provides a refined aesthetic that elevates your outdoor landscape.

Stone Central's honed finish has a rich dark bluestone tone and is predominately used in covered spaces, indoor applications or as wall cladding.

Unlike a polished surface, It has a non-reflective apperance and provides a more matte, natural and sophisticated look for demanding designs.

Sandblasting bluestone pavers involves blasting at high pressure sand or other abrasive materials which gives the stone a more pronounced and gritty apperance and texture that enhances both its aesthetic and functional qualities. Sandblasted bluestone is rougher compared to other finishes like sawn or honed and is used for outdoor applications.

The most noticeable feature of a bush hammered finish is the pronounced, rough surface texture. The surface is typically covered with small indentations, giving the stone a highly textured, almost rugged appearance. This texture is much more pronounced compared to finishes like sawn or sandblasted. While bush hammering can make the surface look rough and industrial, it also enhances the natural beauty of the stone, showcasing its colour and texture in a more dramatic way. It has a rustic, rugged appearance, which is especially favoured in traditional or contemporary outdoor designs.

What is the difference between Bluestone Tiles and Bluestone Pavers?

Bluestone tiles and bluestone pavers are terms often used interchangeably. However, there are key distinctions. Bluestone tiles are typically cut to size and have a thickness of 10, 12, 15 or 20 mm. Bluestone pavers, on the other hand, generally range in thickness from 20 mm to 40 mm.

What surface finishes are available ?

The most common surface finishes for bluestone tiles are sawn, semi-honed, honed, and sandblasted. Other finishes, such as bush hammered, chiseled, tumbled, polished, and flamed, are also available.

Which surface finish should I choose for Bluestone Pavers?

The surface finish you select depends largely on the intended application and whether the pavers will be used indoors or outdoors. Honed bluestone is best suited for indoor use only. Sawn and semi-honed bluestone offer better slip resistance than honed finishes, making them ideal for outdoor applications. Sandblasted bluestone has a rough texture and excellent grip, providing a rustic feel, and is particularly suited for outdoor use.

What are Bluestone Cat Paws?

Cat paws refer to a unique characteristic found in basalt tiles, which distinguishes Stone Central’s pavers from ordinary concrete pavers. Cat paws are irregular, with variations in size, position, and intensity, making each paver one-of-a-kind. This natural feature adds to the exclusivity of bluestone as a paving material.

Are Basalt Cat Paws found on all Pavers?

No. Due to the natural composition of bluestone, cat paws appear randomly, and their occurrence varies across pavers. Stone Central’s basalt selection is curated to include pavers with the perfect blend of cat paw markings.

Do I need to Seal My Bluestone Tiles?

Sealing your bluestone tiles is highly recommended to ensure maximum protection. Choosing a high-quality sealer is crucial, as it will provide longer-lasting, optimal protection. Avoid using low-quality sealers, which may require reapplication every six months. Sealing also helps maintain the cleanliness of your bluestone and makes stain removal easier.

Can I Use Regular Cut Tiles for Pool Coping?

While regular bluestone paving stones can be used for pool coping, Stone Central does not recommend this. Regular pavers have machine-cut edges, meaning the inside edge of the paver facing the pool will have a rough surface finish. Additionally, the edges of standard bluestone tiles have a square finish, rather than a neat bevel.

Bullnose or Dropface Pool Coping?

Both bullnose and dropface (L-shape) bluestone tiles are suitable for pool coping. Dropface tiles offer a sleek, modern look, while bullnose tiles, with their smooth, rounded edges, are perfect for a variety of pool designs, including contemporary and jellybean-shaped pools.

Will Sealing Bluestone Change Its Colour?

There are two types of sealers: transparent and enhancing. Transparent sealers preserve the natural color of the surface, while enhancing sealers deepen the color for a richer appearance.
